Whatever Next?

January 6, 2023

This week we had an exciting parcel arrive in Holly Class Miss Debi and Miss Lindsay were very cheeky and made us wait a whole day before opening it! On the first day we explored the box together noticing that the box had the word fragile on it. Luckily we have worked hard on developing our vocabulary and one of our friends could explain what fragile meant. We then spent a long time hypothesising what might be inside. As usual we naturally became spider learners; drawing from all of our work last term on materials to think of lots of objects made of fragile materials such as clay, glass and china. The children were able to give articulate reasons for their choices explaining how fragile objects are easily broken and made links to their own past experiences. At one point we even became mathematicians when one friend estimated that the box was 2m tall. We then worked out that the box was actually 40 cm tall! Much shorter than he thought! He had decided the box might have a china bowl in it and we then measured a bowl which was 10 cm working out togther that it would need to be four bowls to fill the box. The children were so excited when we finally opened the box and have loved learning the story and thinking about the different characters and how they might feel. They have been writing speech bubbles and thinking of questions all week as well as engaging in lots of drama activities to bring the story to life. They are very excited to see what next week brings!
