The Big Bird Watch

January 28, 2023

Its been another magical week in the world of Holly Class all focused around the RSPB Big Bird Watch. We started the week with our tinkering Tuesday becoming birds ourselves and learning how to weave nests. It was amazing to try to weave real sticks and work out what technique was the best. We quickly worked out that long, thin sticks were the best and through research learnt that damp wet sticks worked well. The children were amazing (as well as our adult helpers) persevering to work out the best way to create their nests as well as continuing to add sticks until they had created a working nest. They were also very considerate of the birds needs making links between human and animal needs in making sure that there were soft areas, food, water, warmth etc. We then spent the rest of the week preparing for our trip to the woods on Friday. We reflected on our past learning about birds applying our knowledge to create tally charts and listen out for and identify bird calls in the environment. We used Google Maps to locate research where Eastwood Farm was and tried to find different routes. Working in pairs to plan the best route. Friday was our absolute favourite day! We went on our big adventure – a walk to Eastwood farm to count the birds as part of the Big Bird Watch. We had an amazing time exploring and finding as many birds as we could. We  found lots of different birds and can’t wait to send the information in to help with the count!
