Our Frozen World

January 23, 2023

The weather has inspired such a lot of learning suring continous provision this week. With the children finding copious amounts of ice in the most unusual of places which they loved exploring using all of their senses. From making links to our shape exploration by finding a range of 2d shaped ice (or creating the shapes themselves). Or trying to lift large pieces of ice without breaking them and using the vocabulary of weight to accurately describe them. We even rescued a woodlouse after noticing bubbles inside the ice and predicting that an animal might have been breathing underneath it. The children were mortified that the woodlouse had frozen so we desperately Googled whether woodlice could survive in ice but alas no! so we did rescue it anyway and placed it somewhere warm to see if it could recover – just in case! As well as learning all about the North Pole and how the Artic is made up solely of Ice: Which led to a long discussion on Global Warming and how we can help! As the week progressed lots of scientific experiments ensued (most initiated by the children) including freezing items in water, guessing which item the frozen shape came out of and testing which materials stopped ice from melting. Yet again the children surprised me with their ability to independently challenge themselves to learn new things, ask questions, and follow their own interests in exciting and fulfilling ways! Another amazing week Holly Class, Well done!
