Studying Ladybirds

September 19, 2022

This week was truly magical in Holly Class. We continued our ladybird theme with the children equally as fascinated with finding the larva and wanting to see if they could find either the eggs or the pupa. Well on Monday their persistence paid off and they started to find lots of little pupa hidden in some unusual places – even in the corner of the water tray! We decided to collect the caterpillar net to help us study the life cycle more and the children carefully handled a few larva and pupa which we placed in the net to watch develop. We then found one on a leaf which we decided to leave there. The children were very concerned for it’s safety and decided it needed to be protected. So off we went looking for a cone to help us and a few children made signs and letters to remind the other children to be careful. We then spent time continuing to research facts about ladybirds with the children writing some amazing sentences to show what they have learnt. We even managed to turn our maths focus in to a ladybird theme! This week really was an example of continuous provision at its best – the children had an amazing time and learnt so much! I wonder what we are going to learn next!
