An Amazing Find….

January 15, 2023

This week started with much excitement when a group of children found something amazing under the classroom – a hole! Being expert nature detectives their minds immediately went towards it being an animal home. But what could it be – A bear! A wolf! A fox! A badger! The children quickly discounted a bear remembering that bears don’t live in the wild in the UK but wanted to work out what animal it might be. Luckily Debi was at hand. We started to look for some clues quickly finding some animal droppings, a foot print and what the children thought might be claw prints on a tree and on th side of the classroom. Debi knew of a useful website that helped identify animals by their droppings which we used. The children were very excited and quickly identified that the droppings belonged to a fox. They wanted to confirm this though and independently used Google to check what fox teeth marks looked like as well as claw marks and foot prints. After they were happy that they were a match they shared their findings with friends.  They had so many questions about foxes wanting to know what they ate, when they woke up, when the babies were born and so many more. Debi couldn’t answer them all so we decided to go to the library to try and find some books on foxes. Unfortunately we couldn’t find them so we wrote a note on the staffrooom board and luckily Miss Amie had a book we could use. We even had children bringing in books from home. Continuous provision this week has been full of the children learning about foxes. They have been finding out about where foxes live, the different types of foxes from around the world etc. They have even been testing out which food the fox might like. First they tried an apple which it didnt touch and on the second day they tried dog food which when we checked the next day the fox had actually ate some. We are continuing to study the fox next week and Miss Hayley has an outside camera which we are hoping to use soon to watch what happens at night!
