Tinkering Tuesady – Making Bear Dens

October 26, 2022

It was our first Tinkering Tuesday today and a wonderful celebration of all of our learning about bears. The children were excited to have the opportunity to be scientists and engineers today bringing together all that they had learnt this term about the lifestyle of bears as well as their learning about materials and their properties to design and make fuctioning dens for their chosen bears. They had lots of ideas and confidently reasoned thier choices using their prior knowledge. They showed excellent team work too managing to negotiate with at least three other friends to develop their idea and stopping at points to reflect on and improve their den before writing up a plan of their model for their friends in future. We had large dens made from tarpaulin and string, ones made of cushions and chairs, smaller ones made of wood, foil and foam. We had reinforces ones using materials to join and secure them, we had small doors and openings that open and shut. You name it they thought of it. The ideas were endless!
